Camp, Chemsex & Grindr - How well portrayed are queer characters in new British playwriting?
Do we need more LGBTQ+ stories about ordinary lives, extraordinarily lived?
As part of PRIDE week, The Union Theatre presents two rehearsed readings of PROUD, the new play by Bren Gosling, which seeks to present alternative narratives.
When his Pentecostal mother dies, Roland- black, 40 decides to live openly as a gay man. He unexpectedly falls for Amir – 21, an immigrant from a war zone. What gets in the way is Amir’s post-traumatic stress, his inability to identify as gay and Roland’s relationship with his 15-year-old son, Gary. PROUD is a compelling story for our time about loss and love, identity and the need to belong.
Each performance at 2.30pm and 7.30pm will be followed by Q & A
Dr.James Lovelock - Lecturer in Musical ( Queer)Theatre Studies University of Wolverhampton will chair 2.30pm post performance Q&A
Rikki Beadle- Blair MBE of Team Angelica will chair 7.0pm post performance Q&A
Beg, Borrow and Bitch
Comedy Night - Thursday 4th July 7:30pm
Comedy sketch show Beg Borrow & Bitch sees the return of Cindy & Cassandra, co-hosts of America’s no.1 feminist shopping channel. After their hit show Two Faced Bitchin’ gets axed from the air, ego’s are bruised, fear sets in and the claws come out, but will these two work together or go it solo? The bitches descend into chaos to reclaim their fame and for- tune - Think Dynasty on steroids, or RuPaul’s Drag Race in the 1980’s and you’re halfway there! Old fashioned British camp characters such as; Posh Foxes and Shady Lady Dinner Ladies clash with retro nostalgia combining all of Hunt & Murphy’s guilty pleasures.
The short and sharp Abbie Murphy, and The BFG (Big Friendly Gay) Ricky Hunt, make for a dynamic duo - visually, it’s already a laugh to look at! Ricky Hunt (Mr immersive) a Secret Cinema veteran and regular host at Park Chinois, and Abbie Murphy Amused Moose Comedy Award Finalist 2015, premiere their new show ‘Beg Borrow & Bitch’. They are two friends, who have known each other for too long.
If you like your comedy alternative, are a fan of the 80s, and enjoy a solid session of inter- pretive dance then this is the show for you.
